Dump Station Tips & Common Mistakes

Before You Arrive

  • Check if the station requires a campground stay or day-use fee.
  • Bring your own hose if you want to rinse. Many stations do not provide one.
  • Carry disposable gloves. Keep a box within arm's reach of your valve.
  • Have a sewer hose support ready. It keeps the hose sloped so everything drains fully.

At the Station

  • Always dump the black tank first, then the gray tank. The gray water helps flush solids.
  • Use rinse water if available. A quick flush saves buildup and odors.
  • Keep the drain cap off while flushing so air can flow through.
  • Do not leave the hose unattended. A slipped hose on the ground is a mess nobody wants.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming every Walmart or rest area has a dump station. Many do not.
  • Arriving after hours. Some stations lock gates at dusk.
  • Forgetting to close the valve before pulling away. Double-check every time.
  • Not logging the visit. After three trips, every station starts to blur together.

What to Log

  • Date and mileage so you know how far you can go between dumps.
  • Fee paid. Some stations charge more on weekends or holidays.
  • Turn radius and lot size. A tight lot is stressful with a 35-foot rig.
  • Water pressure at the rinse spigot. Weak pressure means a longer flush.

Gear pick: A sewer hose support makes every dump faster and cleaner. It keeps the hose at a steady slope so nothing sits in the low spot. Look for an adjustable one that works on uneven ground.

How This Planner Works

1

Pick a Region

Choose your travel area from the dropdown. The station list updates to show dump sites in that region. Use the Quick Route presets for popular RV corridors.

2

Filter What Matters

Toggle free-only, rinse water, or 24-hour access. If you are boondocking, rinse water is a big deal. If you are on a tight schedule, 24-hour access might be the filter that saves your evening.

3

Log Your Stops

Click a station to add it to your trip log, or use the custom entry button. Fill in the date, fee, and anything worth remembering. Your log saves in your browser.

4

Export or Share

Download your log as a CSV file for your records, or copy a share link to send to a travel partner. The link loads the same entries on their device.

Things to Know

  • The built-in station list is a sample set. It is not a complete national database. Always verify hours and fees before you drive out of your way.
  • Your trip log lives in your browser only. It does not sync across devices. Export your CSV regularly as a backup.
  • Seasonal hours vary. A station open in June might close by October. The notes field is a great place to record seasonal details.
  • This planner does not make network requests. Everything runs on your device. Your data stays on your device.
